Carlisle Description

Tasting Note:

Medium-dark to dark ruby-red.  An intoxicating mélange of red mulberry, cassis, tobacco, and freshly tilled loam exudes from the glass.  A touch of blood orange as well.  Very appealing.  On the palate, perfect balance with a silken texture.  Gentle tannins emerge on the mid-palate and carry through the lengthy finish.  Classic Russian River Valley old-vine Zinfandel.  This wine is very enjoyable now but should continue to develop for several more years.

Wine Enthusiast: 94 Points

From a vineyard planted in 1927 and tended to by the producer, this is a bright, lushly crisp wine from a field blend—soft, luxurious and smooth on the palate. The highlights are many, from a seductive leap of raspberry coulis to perfumed lavender and surprisingly nuanced tannins despite the full-bodied ripeness, accentuated by the vintage, and the structured power behind the scenes.

Wine Advocate: 94 Points

The 2013 Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard, from the home vineyard planted in 1927 by another Italian immigrant, is a 701-case cuvée tipping the scales at 15.3% alcohol. The wine is 87% Zinfandel and 13% mixed black and white varietals. (Mike Officer has 30 different varietals planted in this vineyard.) Only about 20% new French oak is used, and the wine bottled unfined and unfiltered. Loads of black raspberry, kirsch liqueur, lavender, licorice and subtle earthy notes are all present in this multidimensional, full-bodied, gloriously decadent and tasty Zinfandel. Drink it over the next decade. - Robert M. Parker, Jr.
