Gaja Description

Tasting Notes

All the crus coming from the 2020 vintage show richness in the mouth. In the Costa Russi, there is an abundance of strawberries, and plums, all showing in a very pronounced way. As the wine opens, there are broader notes of raspberry, red currant, pepper, verbena, elderflower, and
marzipan. The palate starts with a hint of sweetness with a round mouthfeel. The finish is elegant.

James Suckling: 97 Points

Lavender and sage with berries and dried strawberries, but so perfumed and subtle. Medium- to full-bodied with very fine tannins that are totally integrated with finesse and beauty at the end. Caresses your palate.

Vinous: 96 Points

The 2020 Barbaresco Costa Russi is a classy polished wine. Dark cherry plum mocha new leather licorice and lavender all take shape. As always Costa Russi is the most supple and charming of the Gaja Barbarescos in the early going. - By Antonio Galloni on September 2023 This is a superb set of wines from the Gaja family. The 2021 whites are notable for their vibrancy. Moving further into the tasting the 2020 Barbarescos are gorgeous vibrant wines that impress with their delineation. The 2020s need time in the glass to emerge but the signatures of each wine are very much present. The same is true for the 2019 Barolos. These days the Gaja wines are defined by greater energy than in the past but they remain quintessentially Gaia in breeding.

Jeb Dunnuck: 95 Points

“Tasted from barrel and takes on more depth and concentration from the Barbaresco, though is beautifully floral and expansive, with notes of wild strawberry and lavender. Medium-bodied, with fantastic length and persistence, this beautiful wine is showing incredibly well at this early stage prior to release”

Audrey Frick

Wine Spectator: 95 Points

“Fresh and pure, evoking cherry, raspberry, rose, iron and woodsy aromas and flavors, this is complex and solidly built, with a touch of creaminess to its texture and a superlong, expressive finish. Combines finesse and intensity.”

Bruce Sanderson

Decanter: 95 Points

Current production of Costa Russi is just half what it was as problems with frost and heat in 2017 led to vines dying and needing to be pulled up. This south- and west-facing slope at the end of a hill is an exception in our property according to Gaia Gaja as the rest of the family's Nebbiolo is all planted on the top of hills. Compact clay soils and cooler micro-climate make this the most fragrant of Gaja's three single-vineyard Barbaresco bottlings. Delicate but ripe cherry aromas with touches of herbs and earth introduce a finely structured palate; soft and gentle but with brooding power lurking underneath. Its floral and balsamic notes reflect the cool site while the gorgeous finish is pretty and pure. (Drink between 2024-2044)
