Gaja Rennina Description

Vinification

The grapes from the three vineyards ferment and macerate separately for around three weeks. After 24 months of aging in oak, the wines are blended and then aged for another six months in concrete vats.

Technical Information

Varietal Composition: 100% Sangiovese

Tasting Notes

A slightly more concentrated ruby-red color than the classic Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello. Herbaceous Mediterranean notes of rosemary, thyme, and balsamic are more evident and persistent with hints of resin and spice. The palate shows complex tannins that are still reactive but well-made with savory qualities and fresh, balanced acidity making for a fresh and drinkable wine.

Jeb Dunnuck: 94 Points

“Pours a deep ruby hue, with aromas of cherry lozenge, rosemary, pressed flowers, and turned. It is energetic and has ultra-fine tannins as well as vibrant acidity, with crunchy red fruits and underlying iron-rich mineral notes, dried herbs, and lingering floral perfume. Savory and mouthwatering, with a more classically styled and angular feel”

Audrey Frick

Wine Spectator: 94 Points

“Harmonious and bordering on creamy in texture, this red features cherry, raspberry, plum, loam, almond and black pepper aromas and flavors. Reveals pleasant bitterness as this winds down on the lingering aftertaste.”

Bruce Sanderson

Decanter: 94 Points

“Aromatics of Mediterranean herbs, thyme, rosemary and tarragon open to floral notes and crushed stone minerality. The palate is lithe, as Brunello goes. Lifted red and blue berry fruits and a melange of chalky minerality and savoury dried herbs mark the finish with freshness.”

Clive Pursehouse

Wine Advocate: 94 Points

“The Rennina maintains its distinct personality with elegant aromas of red fruit, forest berry, cassis, balsam herb and toasted almond. This vintage shows a hint of baked clay or black olive that underlines the warm vintage conditions. The wine is generous in terms of mouthfeel, with a nice fullness that remains graceful at the same time.”

Monica Larner

Wine & Spirits: 93 Points

“Shows plenty of depth and excellent ripeness in both its dark cherry fruit and its supple tannins. It has a seamless quality and purity of fruit that will keep the wine fresh and balanced over the next several years.”
