It is more than three decades since this mysterious Spanish wine was born. The label: Black. The bottle: Burgundy style. The variety: Cabernet Sauvignon. Few had much faith in this project. Certainly, nobody back in 1979, could have dreamed that it would triumph in a Parisian blind tasting against some of the world’s most famous wines. Yet it marked the start of a new era in wine making: a time in which to stop dreaming and embark on a new journey, year after year, harvest after harvest.
Tasting notes
Intense, dark cherry red. Exquisite black fruit aroma (blueberry jam) with toasty (roasted coffee) and spicy (vanilla, black pepper) undertones. The palate is expressive, powerful, with serious, austere tannins-very characteristic of Cabernet Sauvignon-that gradually meld in the mouth with long, flavorful persistence.
Food pairing
This wine’s noble and healthy tannins will complement the best meat and game dishes. Serve at 17 - 18 ºC.
Lifted aromas of flowers, cherry and black plum are supported by accents of mineral and lightly toasted oak. On the palate, an explosion of ripe, pulpy berry fruit and snappy acidity settles with ease and elegance, while this Cabernet Sauvignon from a warm, dry year offers blackberry, cassis and chocolate flavors. There's plenty of depth to a smooth and balanced finish. This is one to hold for many years. Best from 2025–2045. Michael Schachner
This red is firm, balanced and graceful. Currant and blackberry flavors mingle with smoke, loamy earth and mineral notes. The muscular tannins are well-integrated, the racy acidity lively. Restrained in style, but harmonious. Drink now through 2030. 600 cases imported. (Thomas Matthews)
A complex wine that has plenty of ripe red-plum and blueberry notes that lead to a palate that offers a chalky, modern and fresh array of ripe plums and berries with assertive, spicy oak. Drink or hold.
The herbal 2015 Mas La Plana is one of the oldest Cabernet Sauvignons from Spain. It’s sleek and polished, with varietal character intermixed with a Mediterranean side. The palate is medium to full-bodied with the fine-grained and elegant textbook tannins of the variety. This is from a warm and dry year, and the wine is ripe and powerful but in the Torres style, which is always nicely crafted, balanced and polished. 103,000 bottles and some large formats produced. It was bottled in September 2017.
